Mad Scientist Birthday Party!

So as stated before in earlier posts we had a Mad Scientist Birthday for my son’s 8th Birthday! We did all kinds of experiments and had all kinds of treats. Everything didn’t quite go as planned but what Mad Scientist does everything that is planned. By the time the party day got here I just wanted to get everything done. I’m very thankful for the people that took pictures because I didn’t have time to!

Bow Holder

BOW HOLDER 

I took a simple frame and spray painted it black.

Then I hot glued two different colored pink ribbons on the inner back edge of the frame and it looks like this:

I’ll either sell this one or give it to my niece considering I don’t have a daughter of my own to use it for.

I also made another Earring holder…This one is purple and is just too stinking cute:

Both of these projects cost under $1 to make. I had the black frame from a long time ago and just re-purposed it while the purple frame I bought at a garage sale and painted it with some purple spray paint. The jewelry, wire mesh, and ribbon were materials I already had on hand.

Summer Bucketlist Day 3!! Slime & Puffy Paint!

I attempted to make slime a few months ago but it didn’t quite work out for us…we used the cheap roseart glue over the elmers school glue and it was just a liquid mess. This time we used the real stuff: Elmer’s School Glue!! and IT WORKED!! I think I was more excited then my son but that was because he was more interested in watching Phineas & Ferb: The Movie then helping!

SLIME:
1 4oz bottle of Elmer’s School Glue; White or Clear
4 oz of water
1 cup water
2 tsp borax
Food Coloring: we used the neon green

Step One:
Pour out glue into a bowl. Fill glue bottle with 4 oz of water and mix in with the glue. Stir and add in food color.

Step Two:
Mix 1 cup water with 1-2 tsp borax and stir to combine. (sorry no pic of this one)

Step Three:
Slowly pour glue mixture into the borax bowl. stirring while pouring.

Step Four:
Pick up the slime that forms into your hands and knead it.  (toss the excess water left in the bowl) Slime will become more firm the more you play with it!

PUFFY PAINT

Ingredients:
Flour
Baking Powder
Salt
Water
Food Coloring

Step One:
Add: 1/2 cup flour, 2 TBSP Salt, 2 TBSP Baking Powder and desired amount of food coloring into a ziploc bag!

Step 2:
Pour in 1/2 cup water and close the bag. knead and mix it until it is all mixed up.

(you can add more water or flour as needed to make it the consistency of glue)

Step three:
Cut a whole in one corner of the bag and pour into condiment squeeze bottles.

Step Four:
PAINT!! (We will post pics of our art designs once we start painting!)

My son will be 8 years old in One Month and 2 days!! And since we have started this Bucketlist he has decided that he would like to have a Mad Scientist Birthday Party to be able to do all these experiments with his friends and family. I will be sure to post more pictures after the party in a month but for now i just wanted to share this invitation that I found on ETSY but decided to make my own.

Day 1 of Summer Bucketlist!! Science Day!

Ok so I’ve finally got our Summer Bucketlist printed out and set up and finally have the time to get down to having some fun with it. Today we picked out what we would do the rest of the week and then started on today’s items. We chose to have a Baking Soda and Vinegar day! We aired up some balloons with the mix and made mini colorful volcanoes. Joshua was so excited and thought everything was soo cool.

Balloon Air Up:

Balloons
Empty Water Bottle
Vinegar
Baking Soda
Funnels

 Step One:
Insert small funnel into balloon and put a couple small scoops of Baking Soda inside the balloon.

Step Two:
Insert medium size funnel into the water bottle and pour about a 1/2 cup of Vinegar inside.

Step Three:
Fit the Balloon over the lip of the water bottle

 Step Four:

Lift the balloon and pour the baking soda into the bottle and watch as it airs it up!

 Mini Volcanoes: 

Small Cup
Food Coloring
Baking Soda
Vinegar

Step One:
Add Drops of Food Coloring and Baking Soda into small cups

Step Two:
Add Vinegar and watch!

We Had So much fun doing these experiments. We ran out of Vinegar and then I remembered we had another bottle in our pantry!

Summer Bucket List

It is officially Summertime and the Mommmmms have already begun and I only have one child, even though at times it feels like more!! But thanks to Pinterest I have been able to get ideas for a Summer 2012 Bucketlist of things for my son and I to do all summer. Things ranging from art projects, science projects, to outdoor fun and trips. I first created a Chart that you can download here: Summer Bucketlist 2012. Then I created a page of blank labels that you can download here: summer bucketlist labels. I filled in the labels and even color coded the list.

Strawberry Brownie Cupcakes!

I know this isn’t crafty or glue gun required but I just had to post this recipe I found and modified. I found it from a pin on pinterest. It took me to this blog: I(heart)2stamp which took me to a recipe that she found on allrecipes. I used a box brownie and a box strawberry mix (eek..I know but I didn’t have time to gather everything up to make it from scratch and this is just a test run of these cupcakes) I followed the recipes on the boxes instead of modifying them like on allrecipes. I scooped a layer of brownie mix into the bottom of a cupcake liner then scooped a layer of strawberry cake mix on top of that. Baked them at 350* for 25 min…checked them and then baked them for another 1o min. They are so delicious! I topped them with whipped vanilla icing. I normally fill all my cupcakes with icing but I figured with the brownie on bottom and strawberry cake on top that they wouldn’t need the icing filling!

Mini Modpodge Clipboards

More Graduation Gifts!! While at the Dollar store earlier this week I found these plain mini clipboards. I bought a couple of them so I could decorate them and add them to the gifts for my niece and cousin for their graduations. While Pinterest this week I searched for ideas on how to decorate the clipboards and came across this blog: Marta Writes. I scrounged up some scrapbook paper and printed out 2 pictures: 1 a collage of Paris and girly things, and 1 of a Graduation Subway Art. 

For the second clipboard I used 2 pieces of hot pink cardstock and modpodged it onto the each side of the clipboard. I cut out the scroll pattern from Green cardstock and modpodged it on top of the pink!

Graduation Gifts For Girls

Just like my Previous Earring Holder gift idea that you can check out here this is an earring holder I am making for my cousin for her High School Graduation! I am trying to twist hooks into the bottom of the frame but so far I’ve only been able to get one in…Does anyone have any tips on how to make it easier to get these hooks in? I painted the wooden frames a fuchsia color and hot glued the costume jewelry onto the front. It gives it a very classy posh look…I want to keep it it is so cute… but I don’t have enough earrings for it! I will post pictures of the finished products since I have one more to fix for my niece. This is really easy and cheap to make too… I bought the frame at a garage sale for $0.50, the jewelry and mesh screen came from my grandmother’s house so it was free…the most expensive part of this project was the can of spray paint..which was about $4 at walmart!

More Earring Holders…

I’m thinking of maybe starting a little side business and selling my earring holders…I’ve bout a bunch of different sized wooden frames and I am going to sand, paint, and decorate them. here is one set I’ve finished this week..I’m working two more right now for my step-niece and step-cousin’s graduation gifts!
